The ancient weaving town of Sudbury is situated on the River Stour, is the birthplace of the painter Thomas Gainsborough, and it still retains much of the character and charm of a medieval market town.

The surrounding unspoilt Suffolk countryside is noted for its many villages of historic interest including Long Melford with its Elizabethan Halls and the picturesque village of Lavenham, famous for its timbered houses and perpendicular church
